Japanese Phrase of the Day! - Home Again Print E-mail
Japanese Phrases

Since we know how to welcome ourselves back into our homes, let's learn how to greet our family members when they come home to us! Note that this is normally said AFTER the person has greeted us with "Tadaima" first.

Romaji: Okaeri (-nasai)! (oh-kah-eh-REE [nah-SIGH])

Japanese: お帰り{~なさい}!

Meaning: Welcome back!/Welcome home!

There's that "-nasai" again! If you want to be more polite (just like "oyasuminasai"), use "okaerinasai," but I usually just hear "okaeri". This phrase is not to be used when you're welcoming a customer to your place of employment, particularly shops, restaurants, or even homepages. Instead, you'd use "Yookoso (YOH-koh-soh)! (ようこそ!)" or more commonly, "Irasshaimase (ee-rosh-SHY-mah-SEH)! (いらっしゃいませ!)" See you next time for another phrase!
