Japanese Phrase of the Day! - Empathy Print E-mail
Japanese Phrases

I'm gonna teach you a very simple but frequently used phrase today! You hear it a LOT in anime & dramas.

Romaji: Dai jou bu desu ka? (die joe boo dess kah)

Japanese: 大丈夫ですか。 (だいじょうぶですか。)

Meaning: Are you OK?

If you're asking someone you're more familiar with (i.e.: family member, friend/peer, those younger than you), you can leave out the "desu ka". This also goes for answering people you're close to...just inflect your tone to make it a statement instead of a question. Also, to give a positive answer to people you aren't too familiar with or to your superiors, all you have to do is leave out the "ka". Easy right? See you again next time for another phrase! Let me know if there's anything you'd like to learn how to say!
