Japanese Phrase of the Day! - Good Night! Print E-mail
Japanese Phrases

Since it's late at night & many of us will be off to bed soon (& since you already know how to say "good evening"), I'll teach you what to say to your friends & family before going to bed!

Romaji: Oyasumi [-nasai] (oh-YAHS-mi [na-SIGH])

Japanese: お休み{~なさい}おやすみ{なさい}

Meaning: Good night!

"Oyasumi" is what you say to your immediate family & close friends as well as those younger than you. "Oyasuminasai" is said to those individuals who aren't as close to you or older individuals who aren't part of your immediate family (i.e: your aunt in Australia whom you haven't seen or talked to in 10 years). In case you're wondering, the "-nasai" part is one way of saying "please" in Japanese. So, "oyasuminasai" literally means "rest please". However, "-nasai" cannot be used by itself; it has to be tacked on as an ending to the nominative conjugation of a verb. If you wanna learn more about it, send me a message or google it. Well, have fun practicing & I'll teach you something new tomorrow! Oyasuminasai, mina-san! ^_^
