Japanese Phrase of the Day! - Dattebayo Print E-mail
Japanese Phrases

Well, today's phrase technically isn't a Japanese phrase at all! As a request from Gabe, I'm going to change today's "Japanese Phrase of the Day" to "Anime Phrase of the Day."

Romaji: Dattebayo (DAHD-teh-bah-YO)

Hiragana: だってばよ

Meaning: Actually, there really is no meaning to this word! It's Naruto's own special way of ending sentences & verbs.

You can actually use the "-ttebayo" ending with any Japanese verb you want! You just have to conjugate the verb to the "te" form & add "bayo" at the end. Here's an example:

Romaji: Mattebayo! = Wait!

Kanji+Hiragana (hiragana only): 待ってばよ!(まってばよ)

If you're not sure how to conjugate Japanese verbs, then take a look at www.jdic.com or any other Japanese language site to help you. See you tomorrow for another phrase!
